Self Care for Women Physicians: A Different Perspective

The importance of self care for women physicians

Buzz word alert : “self care”. Be honest. Do you roll your eyes a little when you see those two little words? They are everywhere…especially when it comes to physician wellness. When you really think about self care for women physicians what does it really mean??

What does self care for women physicians look like?

We hear all the time that physicians should invest in self care. Wellness should be a priority. What does that really mean?? It means whatever you and I make it mean.  Here’s what I make it mean. Self care is about so much more than getting a massage, spending time doing a hobby you love, taking a bubble bath, getting a good night’s sleep or buying a new pair of shoes. (Although I LOVE all of those things!! especially the shoes!)

All of these are important, but none of them genuinely relieves stress, frustration, or overwhelm.  Sure, they may help us feel better for a short time, but typically all of those underlying negative feelings are still there. If you’re anything like me, you get the massage but run your mental to-do list or worry about a patient you saw the whole time.

The Foundation of Self Care

The foundation of true self care is learning to control and manage our own thoughts.  The truth is, most of us (including me!) never really stop to think about how our thinking affects our lives. We never stop to question our thoughts… we assume they are just automatic and true.We have thoughts about circumstances. Those thoughts trigger our feelings. Feelings drive our actions. Our actions determine our results. While we can’t control circumstances, we can control our own thoughts.

The Beginning of Change

When I really learned to manage my thoughts…regardless of the circumstances, everything changed. Realizing that you can take excellent care of yourself regardless of your circumstances… that’s genuine self care.  It’s life-changing self care.
